Workshops

LadyHawk designs workshops are usually one or more all day workshops.  They are focused around the techniques applied to the various LadyHawk designs quilts and wearable art, and are packed full on few and innovative ways of manipulating fabric and thread, as well as tips that will help you be a better seamstress and quilter.  The workshops are hands on, designed to demonstrate and explain each technique thoroughly, and then time is allotted for students to practice the techniques in a supportive environment.

I especially love to do workshops for guilds and quilting or sewing groups.  If you are a member of such a group, or just have a group of friends who would love to have one of my workshops, e-mail me and we will work out a deal where I come to you!

The following workshops are designed to be all day workshops.  Each incorporates different techniques used in my designs (see descriptions for details).  All of my workshops are focused on learning to use new techniques.  They are structured with several demonstration periods, each followed by ample time for students to experiment with the techniques first hand.  They are pockets of time filled with creativity, designed to inspire you to 'try something new'.

Workshops are not pre-requisite - you may take them in any order you wish.

I will be happy to design a 'custom' workshop to suit your needs if you desire - just give me a call.  Rate for an all day workshop is $50.00 per student - minimum 10, maximum 20 students.

TextureScapes 1 & 2

One Session - 6 hours

Skill level:  Confident Beginner

This popular workshop is designed with the confident beginner in mind.  You're ready to 'do something different', but you're not sure how to get started.

In this workshop, you will learn to add texture and interest to your designs by using raw edge appliqué, pin tucks, and a couple of ways to add depth and dimension with my easy trapunto methods.  We will also cover two different methods of chenille techniques, along with several uses for bonding and straight stitch embellishment. We will top it all off by learning several different methods to create three-dimensional flowers and leaves.

Anyone who is interested in dimension and texture will 'find' their creative self in this fun class.  It is bound to inspire you and give you creative ideas of your own!

TextureScapes 3

One session - 6 Hours

Skill level:  Confident beginner

This is the workshop of your dreams.  It is the perfect place to learn new techniques that you've been afraid to try. It is my most popular class - it always proves to be a fun-filled inspirational day!

This technique class addresses the 'embellishing' aspect of my designs.   In this workshop, we start with the basics of free motion stitching, so it is not necessary to have free motion experience before you come to class.  From the basics we will move forward at warp speed, exploring several different techniques that will enable you to create dozens of embellishments.  I use this method in some way on almost all of my designs, to create plants or animals that have a realistic, dimensional appearance.  We will also incorporate several uses for bobbin work, including straight stitch and free motion bobbin work, two easy methods of couching fibers, and countless ideas for employing these methods in your projects.  You'll leave at the end of the day with your head full of new and exciting ideas - more fun than adults should have!

Tack Room to Tea Room Vest

One session - 6 hours

Skill Level:  Confident Beginner - some clothing construction and quilting skills helpful.

This garment, aptly named ‘Tack Room to Tea Room’ will literally go anywhere – from the rodeo grounds to a night on the town or afternoon tea with the girls.  It’s all in the fabric choices – choose black or ivory for evening wear, go soft and feminine, bright and funky, or choose a western, ethnic, or some other theme – you are in control!  This unique vest is comprised of several simple to sew panels, which are assembled to create a one of a kind piece of wearable art.  Every one of these vests looks different, based on the fabric choices and placement of the panels.

I have developed several new techniques which debut on this vest – don’t miss my complex looking three-dimensional arrowheads! These are so simple to do, but they sure don’t look it!  This technique is one you’ll want to use over and over again.   In keeping with my usual style, this vest is very dimensional and full of texture and motion.  It is also incredibly easy to fit on almost every body!  You’ll also learn, ‘Bulls and Bears’, ‘Vanishing Points’, ‘Fiber Frenzy’, ‘Scrap Happy’ , and there’ll be lots of discussion about fabric and panel placement to make this vest uniquely yours.

This workshop is a combination of hands on sewing and demonstration, in order to cover more of the techniques.  You will have an opportunity to stitch some of the techniques in class, and I will demonstrate the easiest ones for you.  Don’t worry – there’s nothing scary in this one!  It is all straight sewing, based on skills you already have.

Don’t miss this opportunity to take the workshop directly from the designer herself!

LadyHawk designs Wearable Art

One session - 6 hours

Skill Level:  Confident Beginner - some clothing construction skills helpful.

Don't miss these spectacular one-of-a-kind vests!

'Total Eclipse' was influenced by the clear sunny days and bright starlit nights of the desert Southwest.  This best is a fantasy portrayal of sun, moon, and stars on an embellished 'Scrap Happy' background. This vest just oozes texture, and is the perfect place to show off those beautiful decorative threads and stitches.

'Hot Time at the Horny Toad Hangout' is a realistic, yet whimsical view of adorable horny toads and brightly colored lizards.

In this class you'll learn all the techniques that go into both of these vests:  the 'Scrap Happy' technique, bonding, and 'controlled' free motion stitching - learn my methods for maintaining full control of your work when free motion stitching!

I will demonstrate each technique in class, then you'll have plenty of time to practice the techniques yourself and work on your vest.  By doing some prep work at home prior to class, you'll have the entire class session available to sew! Both garments are easy to do, and truly a work of art!

This workshop is a technique workshop - you don't have to actually make the vest if you don't want to - you can just come and learn the techniques!

'Reigning Cats & Dogs'

One session - 6 hours

Skill Level:  Confident beginner

You've been begging for a workshop on my newest designs, 'Puppy Love' and 'Kitty Litter', so here it is.

These quilts make the purr-fect gift for a child, grown-up, yourself, or even your pet!

These adorable quilts are very easy to make - much simpler than they look!  They include simple piecing, 3-D piecing, bonding, and machine appliqué techniques.  The easy 3-D piecing and some free form rotary cutting adds life and whimsy to the quilt.  I'll demonstrate the techniques, then you'll go hands on to start building your blocks in class.  You'll have plenty of time to sew in this class, as these are very simple techniques.

Please note:  There is a pre-class assignment for this class - just some cutting and tracing - to prepare you for class and make your class time more productive.
